Attn Bands: How to Submit Music to The Great Southern Brainfart

All of the information here is on a separate page of the blog.  If you at the menu, you’ll see a link that says “Submit Music for Review.”  The reason I am posting this here as an entry is because I still get submissions from people that seem to either not read the guidelines at all or don’t know that they even exist on this page.  I have updated this page with some new guidelines on how to submit your band’s music to be reviewed.  Please read all about it and feel free to pass it on to anyone that you know.

These days, the music world is completely over saturated making it nearly impossible to hear all of the great music that lies out there just waiting to be unearthed. At The Great Southern Brainfart, I love having the opportunity to spread the word on a band to my readers with hopes that it will bring that band some much deserved attention. I get a lot of messages here and there from bands wanting to submit music for me to review and what not so I figured I would set this page up for those artists. Unlike a lot of sites, this is a one man operation. I don’t have a staff of music listeners. It’s just me and with that being said, I have certain musical tastes. If you are a band looking to submit music for a review, please see my criteria for the kind of bands I will review:

Female Fronted Metal
I generally love female fronted metal bands and the sound of a solid female voice. If you’re a band with a female and male singer similar to Lacuna Coil, I also enjoy that dynamic as well.

Metal Bands with Clean Vocals
I am not a fan of Death Metal so if you’re singer sounds like Cookie Monster, this isn’t the best place to submit your music. It’s nothing personal. If you want a fair and honest review, try submitting to a site that promotes and likes this form of metal. You deserve that. Bands like Epica and 3 Inches of Blood who use a contrast of “cookie monster” vocals and clean vocals are an exception as I feel that is a cool dynamic.

Classic/Traditional Metal Revivalists (New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal)
Bands like Holy Grail, 3 Inches of Blood, Icarus Witch, Gypsyhawk and White Wizzard are good examples of new modern bands who are performing in the tradition of classic 70’s and 80’s hard rock/metal.

Progressive Metal
I enjoy many Prog Metal bands such as Fates Warning, Anubis Gate and Symphony X just to name a few.

Stoner/Doom Metal
Corrosion of Conformity, Graveyard, Cathedral, some Crowbar (not all) = awesome. I love the melodic and doomy sludgy sound of bands like that.

Glam/Sleaze Metal
I have been known to have a soft spot for bands like Ratt, Poison, Rhino Bucket, etc. Bands like this these days are few and far between but I do dig it when it’s done well.

Blues Based Hard Rock/Metal
Bands like Great White, Tesla, Cinderella just to name a few are those blues/roots based hard rock/metal bands that I always seem to enjoy when done well.

Punk/Metal Crossover Bands
Bands like Toxic Holocaust, DRI and Municipal Waste are good examples of the kind of bands that I tend to enjoy. While this is an kind of broad niche, I can’t say that I like them all. I do like the three bands that I just listed so maybe I’ll like your band if your similar in style/sound.

Instrumental Metal Bands:
Bands like Lonero, Scale The Summit, Gnomonaut, and Eagle Claw are great examples of the kind of instrumental music that I love so if you’re in that ballpark, then submit away!

I think that about covers it. If you’re band meets any of the above listed criteria, please feel free to submit your music. In order to do so, please follow these guidelines:

1. Send an email to don(@)thegreatsouthernbrainfart.com
2. In the SUBJECT line, please format it like this: SUBMISSION – [band name] – [style of music played] – [location]
3. Include any form of bio telling me a bit about your band.
4. Please include a photo of your band.
5. Include a link to download and/or stream you’re album.
6. DO NOT SEND LINKS TO YOUTUBE clips. I don’t review bands based on a lyric video or shitty iPhone video. Send links to full album/albums only.

It’s really that simple. If your emails don’t follow these guidelines, your band’s material will not be listened to. By following these guidelines, it just makes it easier for me to keep all of my submissions routed to one e-mail folder as opposed to just getting lost in the mad, insane black hole that is my Inbox. Just follow these guidelines and I will give your band a fair listen. I will respond to EVERYONE who submits music and give you my honest feed back be it good or bad. I’m a passionate and critical fan of music and I feel that constructive criticism is the best kind as it helps to shape a band and help them grow. Just be sure to have some thick skin and be willing to take what not just I but what other people have to say as well. You may learn a thing or two.

Best of luck to you!
