Album Review: Truls Morck

Truls Morck – Truls Morck
Release Date: 2015

The self-titled debut album from former Graveyard guitarist/current Graveyard bassist (did you get that?) Truls Morck is an album that really caught me off guard. I think it’s pretty common to assume that when a member of a band branches off to make an album of his/her own that it will probably sound very similar to that of their respective band. Truls Morck opted for the element of surprise releasing an album that pulls from influences such as Pink Floyd, Mazzy Star, and 90’s era alternative fuzz rock. These elements combined with Morck’s Bob Dylan-esque, vocal stylings create one of the most unique and fascinating albums I’ve heard this year.

Before I got started I just had a feeling that this was going to be an album that really needed my full attention so I grabbed the headphones, settled into my chair, and hit play. The opening track “Take Down the Sun” is a fuzz rock jam that really gets the blood pumping and sets the pace for the start of this sonic ride while the next track, “City Lights”, slows things down to a coast. “Stillness” had me closing my eyes and really falling into the song while the Mazzy Star tinged “Hundred Hours” just made me feel as if I was melting. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more awesome, the closing track “Cave” totally reminded me of a psychedelic era Grateful Dead jam that closed out this sonic journey.

There’s nothing better than an album that makes you feel like you are being taken on journey of sorts. Truls Morck managed to take so many influences and combine them into one cohesive collection of songs. This is the kind of album that I would call the perfect 1am album. It’s the kind of album that you can put on after all the people have left the party and you just need to wind down from all the over stimulation. Truls Morck’s debut solo release is a sonic psychedelic fuzz rock masterpiece. It’s chockfull of poetic lyrics that paint vivid images in the mind while the music lays a psychedelic soundscape that actually takes you somewhere. This is an album that has quickly become a “go to” for me when I just need to slow down, take a breath, and escape the frantic pace of life in general.
