Album Review: The Dead Daisies – Revolucion

The Dead Daisies – Revolucion

The Dead Daisies is some sort of super group/music collective that was first brought to my attention by then Black Star Riders bassist Marco Mendoza. He had decided to leave Black Star Riders to pursue The Dead Daisies on a full time basis. I thought this was a pretty bold move and I couldn’t wait to hear what this band was all about. After giving their self-titled debut album a listen, I wasn’t impressed in the least but as soon as I heard that their follow up, Revolucion, would be featuring new singer John Corabi, my interest was suddenly piqued once again. John Corabi is one of hard rock’s greatest voices and I was eager to hear what he would bring to this band.

The first song on the album, “Mexico”, really didn’t do anything for me and to be honest I found it to be extremely uninteresting. Nothing about the song seemed to capture my interest. Musically, the next song “Evil” seemed to show some promise but again, I was feeling nothing. I was starting to get a little nervous but once I got to “Make the Best of It” I could feel my head nodding, my feet tapping, and I was feeling it. At this point, I started to hear some versatility in the songwriting. “Something I Said” really connected with me as it has the vibe of early Black Crowes. This song featured some of John Corabi’s best vocal work to date. “Get Up, Get Ready” was full of nasty funk and a groove that was beyond infectious. To go from an almost southern rock ballad to a straight up funk groove in the same album is a pretty bold thing to do and I loved being caught off guard like that.

John Corabi is such a monster vocalist and he really gave these songs his all. He has so much soul, groove, and passion and he just may be what these songs needed. I feel that the songwriting on this album has some pretty stellar moments with songs like “Something I Said”, “Make the Best”, and “Get Ready”, and the Beatlesque “Sleep” showing some versatility. Songs like “Mexico”, “My Time”, “Midnight “Moses” seemed to all be pretty forgettable moments but still listenable. Sonically the album is damn near perfect with stellar production and not sounding over processed or synthetic. There is a very real, natural sound to this album that I really loved hearing.

If you’re looking for an album that is going to make you think or even be thought provoking this is not the album for you. If you’re looking a good, drop the top down, roll the windows down rock n’ roll album than the Dead Daisies Revolucion will be one of the perfect soundtracks. This album is a fun slab of solid rock n’ roll that should whet the palate of anyone who loves good, no frills, music.
