Concert Review: Blind Melon – Charlotte, NC – 03/07/2008

Last night in Charlotte, Blind Melon went above and beyond anything I could’ve imagined! For starters, re-connecting with the Blind Melon Forum clan after so long was a great treat. We all hung, hugged and caught up then went in. The opening act was pretty terrible (Rogers, if you’re reading this, my band Mystery Road would love to open then next time you play the Carolinas, hint hint!) so it was a pretty brutal, but quick 30 minutes. Not long after the house lights went down, the intro tape rolled and the band took the stage before a full house. I don’t know if it was sold out or not but it was PACKED to the rafters.

Glen kicked in w/ that familiar drum intro that starts out “Soak The Sin” and they were off. The energy of the audience was just so positive and high that you just had to be loving it not just for yourself but the band. Follwing “Soak” was “Galaxie” and then “2×4”. Trust me, it was like the gates had been opened for a stampede of horses. The show had a great flow and the band was loving it. CT didn’t seem to be as dominant of a character has I had seen him in the past but tonite, it was all about Rogers and Travis. Rogers rockstar poses and Townsend like swagger just really had us all chanting “Rogers! Rogers!” in between songs that had him laughing and grinning at times to himself. It was great fun to see the band so energetic and tight.

Some of the other highlights were the always beautiful “Sleepyhouse”, the bubble and light show during “Skinned” which had us all singing along and laughing, the absolutely amazing “Time” closer that had this amazing jam in the end of it and MY personal highlight was face ripping “Paper Scratcher” which had the whole audience dancing and singing “My mind is a mind that I have come to know…”. It was pretty amazing!

The songs from the upcoming album sounded fantastic in the set. “Wishing Well” was my fave but after this show, I’d have to say that “Sometimes” is probably my 2nd fave. My first fave is “Down On The Pharmacy” which they had played previous nights but to my dismay, it was not on the setlist. There was even a rumor going around about a song not played yet that might be added (Sonya, I heard what song it was! Shhhhh!) and that didn’t happen either.

This night I also felt was so much tighter than the last run. Travis has really come into his own as a member of this band and gone was the justification of why he was there and whatnot. This time he just took the stage and did what he does. There’s no need for him to justify his presence or explain it. He’s proved himself numerous times already so it’s great to see him just finally comfortable in the new set of shoes he’s brought to the band.

The show was yet another magical night in the Blind Melon history book kids. This band gives 110% and it REALLY shows. In all honesty, with it being only March, I’d say it’s pretty safe to say that I may have peaked early as this show is going to be and extremely hard one to beat!
