Album Review: Jess and the Ancient Ones – The Horse and Other Strange Tales

Jess and the Ancient Ones – The Horse and Other Strange Tales
Release Date: December 1, 2017
Label: Svart Records

There’s a certain deal of stress that comes along with the anticipation of one of your favorite bands releasing a new album.  When Jess and the Ancient Ones returned in 2017 with The Horse and Other Strange Tales I was both nervous and ecstatic.  The shortness of the songs at first glance made me a bit skeptical because it was the band’s previous 8 minutes and 20-minute-long epics that truly moved me.  Would these shorter songs do the trick?

“Death is the Doors” kicked in and right away I found myself nodding my head while sporting a shit eating grin.  This was going to be a great journey for sure so I just turned on, tuned in, and dropped out.  “Shining” is a horror a go-go masterpiece that sounds like it could be a lost Doors classic.  “You and Eyes” serves to be the epic track of the album.  Clocking in at over 7 minutes long, “You and Eyes” is pure psychedelic bliss that proves that nobody, and I mean nobody, does this style of music better than Jess and the Ancient Ones.

The Horse and Other Strange Tales is such a monumental album and it’s an album that sounds like nothing out there today.  Instead of taking the predictable step and making an album that was just an extension of it’s predecessor, Jess and the Ancient Ones made the album that they wanted to make and the album that they needed to make at this point in their career.  The Horse and Other Strange Tales is yet another amazing chapter in this steadily growing mysterious story.  I can’t wait to see what Jess and the Ancient Ones has in store for us as I feel there will be many amazing and unpredictable chapters to follow.
