One Hour Of Metal Vol. 2

Riotgod – Crusader
Without a doubt one of my favorite new bands of 2010.  Riotgod is psychedellic stoner metal at it’s greatest.  They sound like a modern day Captain Beyond and this song just melts face.  How can you go wrong with a singer named Sunshine?  This is some groovy face rock that you must check out!

Gwar – Battle Lust
I can really dig me some GWAR but what this made me realize is that I can really only take them in small doses.  They are just so overwhelming to listen to at time and especially after hearing something groove oriented and melodic before it.  If I’m going to really enjoy Gwar, I need to listen to only Gwar at the time.  This was a sonic brainfuck and in all honesty, this isn’t their best song.

Megadeth – Out On The Tiles
How the fuck can you go wrong with Megadeth covering Led Zeppelin.  This cover is one of those songs that I totally forgot existed until it popped up on random and I just laughed to myself.  Megadave growling the words of Robert Plant is just too much fucking win!  Awesome X10!

Dokken – So Many Tears
Dokken is a band that I find myself liking more as I get older.  Weird huh?  I was never a huge fan as a kid but their songs are really catchy as all hell and the way they delivered the songs were top notch.  Kick ass harmony vocals, catchy hooks and choruses and great playing all around.  Great song from a great band.

Venom – Black Metal
It’s hard to believe listening to this that this came out in 1982.  Even now it’s pretty fucking heavy but damn I can only imagine what people must have though when this album first came out.  My parents pretty much drew the line at Venom saying “No way!” but as I got old I appreciated them and got into their stuff.  This is a classic song and it’s easy to see the influence these guys had on a whole generation of bands we would see further down the road.

Dream Theater – Take Your Fingers From My Hair
I never thought I’d see the day where a well known band would pay tribute to the New Orleans power trio Zebra.  Even though they were from New Orleans originally, Zebra relocated to Long Island, New York where they would find some cult like success and eventually be an influence and inspiration to Dream Theater.  This is one of Zebra’s finest tunes and Dream Theater really tipped their hat to them with this cover.  Amazing cover of an amazing song.

Ugly Kid Joe – Sweet Leaf/Funky Fresh Country Club (Live)
These guys never got the love they deserved.  It was almost like it was cool to hate Ugly Kid Joe but goddamn these guys kicked ass.  They were a top notch live band and they really brought it in a huge way in concert.  This live version is from a show in Santa Barbara in 1991 and they fucking melt it down in a huge way.  I still love how they managed to make one long song out of Sweet Leaf and their own funk metal song.  Great fucking song!  So much win!

Dio – All The Fools Sailed Away (Live)
This song never ceases to give me goosebumps.  I always loved Dio’s songs because Ronnie wrote songs FOR his audience.  None of his songs were pretentious or egotistical.  His songs were for the people that listened to him.  It’s almost like he knew he was one of us and what it was like to be outcasts so all his songs were uplifting and had a way of making you feel that someone truly understood you.  This song is just such a great song and live Dio’s voice just soars and fills a room.  What a loss yet what a great legacy he left behind.

Anthrax – Stand or Fall
Spreading The Disease for the fucking win.  When I hear this shit it just confirms to me that Anthrax is totally deserving of being on of the “Big 4” metal bands.  Joey Belladonna is a powerhouse and this song is a great moment.  Anthrax always managed to be on the more melodic side of things and this is a good example of that melodic side.  You just can’t go wrong with classic Anthrax!
