Album Review: Buckethead – Electric Tears

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketYa know, sometimes I need a lil something different. Sometimes I need to be audibly relaxed. I’ll be honest, most of the time, I am listening to everything from Allman Brothers Band to Megadeth. From Phish to Cathedral and just about anything in between. When my day has been going a bit crazy and I feel the need to put on the breaks for a bit, I turn to this man:

No, it’s not Jason on the guitar. It’s Buckethead! Buckethead is one of the most innovative guitarists to ever surface in the world of the the Shredheads. I mean, this guy can just rip it up. He plays with preciseness and finesse at that. Buckethead also has put out an album that if you give it a listen, can take you away to places you’ve never thought you could go.Buckethead’s 2002 release “Electric Tears” is an album that transcends the transcendental. It is meditative, beautifully intricate and yet so easy to listen to. This is the album that I can literally feel slow my heart rate down and just make that hectic day not so hectic. The opening song “All In The Waiting” is a beautiful way to start off the album. This song really sets the mood and has you really calm yet anticipating what is to come. “Sketches of Spain”, the 2nd track is probably my favorite. It’s one of those songs that the minute you hear it, the title just makes so much sense to you. It’s like if you could put to music the gentle and subtle movements of a pencil or charcoal to a blank parchment. It’s really quite beautiful. The haunting yet gorgeous “Spell of the Gypsies” closes the album in a way that the minute the last note is played, it’s almost as if you are brought back to consciousness with a relaxed mind and body.

As hokey as it may sound, this is a very meditative album. If you are into meditating to music, I highly recommend this album. If you aren’t into that stuff, this album still serves as a great way to just wind down the day. It’s a nice change of pace from the different types of music that I listen to so when I just want to be calmed down and just mellow, this album does the trick! Check it out.
