One of the perks of what I do is getting to hear a lot of bands for the first time.  Every now and then a band presents itself to me as a diamond in the rough and that is the case with Denmark’s Anubis Gate.  Anubis Gate has just released their latest self-titled album and first for Nightmare Records and upon first listen to the opening track “Hold Back Tomorrow” I was completely captivated and drawn in.  Lead vocalist/bassist Henrik Fevere has a very powerful yet clear and organic voice that evokes a lot of passion and emotion which comes through loud and clear on “World In A Dome.”  If Dream Theater ever needs to replace James LaBrie, I would honestly have to say that Fevre would be a prime candidate for this position.  Each song is executed with such passion and precision that it manages to break the mold of the sometimes robotic and stiff sound of progressive metal.  The songs all have a feel to them that at times even gave me goosebumps because the hooks were so catchy and melodic.  When the listener can “feel” the music that they are hearing, that’s when you know you have found a real gem.

The songs on “Anubis Gate”  are amazingly orchestrated, executed flawlessly and extremely well written.  The progressive metal genre is already over saturated as it is and after a while all the bands just start to run together.  Anubis Gate seems to have that element that makes them stand out and capture my attention.  I personally find Anubis Gate to be one of more accessible, melodic and easy on the ears progressive metal bands I’ve heard in a long time.  It’s the kind of of album where once you’ve finished listening to it, you actually want to listen to it again.  Too often I hear an album and say, “That was a good album” and then I forget about it.  “Anubis Gate” has ingrained itself in my mind and truly outstanding album that is worthy of multiple listens.  It’s albums like this that make me happy and excited to be a fan of this genre of music.
