Welcome back to another installment of “You Should Be Listening To…” There is so much music out there that it is nearly impossible to hear it all. Even here where I do album reviews, interviews and what not with many bands it’s still hard to keep it all together. The point of this feature is to pick a band and introduce you to them by describing them, giving you an album to start out with and a little bit of information on them. Some of these bands may be defunct and some of them just may be kicking ass right under your nose and you don’t even know it. So settle in and check out what the Brainfart thinks you should be listening to.

You Should Be Listening To: The Heavy Eyes
Dates Active: Currently Active
You’ll dig them if you like: Graveyard, Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Corrosion of Conformity
Best Album To Start With: Heavy Eyes

I was recently contacted by one of the members of the Memphis based band Heavy Eyes to give their stuff a listen.  The band describes their music as, “Psychedelic blues rock from the delta that sounds similar to a skeleton driving a speed boat on a flaming Mississippi River headed back to 1969.” With a description like that how could I not give them a listen? I sure am glad I did and let me tell you just how much I loved what I heard. The over all sound is reminiscent of their geographic surroundings. Much like how Graveyard sounds like where they’re from, The Heavy Eyes sound very much like their southern roots: Swampy, muggy, brooding, and full of soul. The songs are very reminiscent of classic acts like Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath while adding a bit of Cajun seasoning and frying it all up Southern style. Be sure to check out songs like “Iron Giants”, “Voytek”, and “In Need” as these are the songs that really stood out to me. The Heavy Eyes are a new spin on that classic sound creating unpretentious, organic hard rock that is good for the mind and even better for the soul. If you don’t get into this band you are definitely missing out.

About Don de Leaumont

Don (aka. The Brainfart) has been a heavy metal fan since hearing it for the first time in 1983. Don is also repsonsible for all of the typos, shitty grammar, and kick ass content on this site. Don likes cheap beer, whiskey, Coca Cola Icees, going to shows, and hanging with his kick ass wife, two cats and dog. He originally wanted to name his dog Shandi but his wife said, "No fucking way."
