You Should Be Listening To: Brave

Welcome to another installment of “You Should Be Listening To…” There is so much music out there that it is nearly impossible to hear it all. Even here where I do a lot of album reviews, interviews and what not with many bands it’s still hard to keep it all together. The point of this feature is to pick a band and introduce you to them by describing them, giving you an album to start out with and a little bit of information on them. Some of these bands may be defunct and some of them just may be kicking ass right under your nose and you don’t even know it. So settle in and check out what the Brainfart thinks you should be listening to.

Brave isn’t your ordinary female fronted metal band so don’t be so quick to write them off. Hailing from our Nation’s capitol, Brave delivers their own brand of progressive heavy metal infused with a healthy dose of Celtic influence to just make it that much sweeter. Lead by vocalist/keyboardist Michelle Loose Schrotz, Brave’s music is very easy to digest and get into. What I love most about Brave is that they are just proggy enough to show just what they can do yet they are just metal enough to melt faces and totally kick ass. Their songs are beautifully melodic and I can hear influences such as Dio, Queensryche, The Gathering, Lacuna Coil and at times even a bit of Dokken in there for good measure. No one song sounds like the other which makes listening to Brave a really fun experience.

With two full length albums (2003’s Searching for the Sun and 2008’s Monuments) and two EPs (2008’s Waist Deep in Dark Waters and Passages), Brave shows so much versatility and they show their ability to really create some great songs. There wasn’t a single song on any of their albums that I felt was a bad song. Some were better than others and some were just flat out epically awesome. Do yourself a favor and go to Spotify and look them up. Listen to their albums and find out just what you’ve been missing. Brave is a band that should appeal to all fans of metal as they just seem to cover so much ground. I have no doubts that Brave just could very well be your new favorite band. Why not? They’re mine after all.
