Album Review: Children of the Sun – Flowers

Children of the Sun – Flowers
Release Date: July 26th, 2019

Some of the best albums I have ever listened to are the ones that just aren’t easily put into words.  When the latest album from Swedish psychedelic cult band Children of the Sun showed up in my inbox, I honestly didn’t know what to think.  I took one look at the picture and the first thing I thought was, “Oh man.  These kids are just babies who look like they are donning their parent’s hippie clothes from ‘90s Phish and/or Grateful Dead shows.  They actually looked like a crew that if they offered me a glass of Kool-Aide I DEFINITELY wouldn’t drink it.

As always, I went in with an open mind and right out of the gates with “Her Game” I was intrigued.  The song was catchy, had a great chorus, and it was the perfect hook, line, and singer.  “Emmy” is hands down the show stopper of the album.  Musically, this song was so well written and the performance was nothing short of ethereal.  The lead and harmony vocals take this song to unbelievable heights and it truly is a musical journey.

If I had to describe Children of the Sun in a nutshell, they look like a cult, they sound like a mix of all the awesomeness of the Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar soundtracks creating a goulash of all things that make Swedish psych rock remarkable.  Take a pinch of Graveyard (“Like a Sound”), Blues Pills (“Hard Workin’ Man), and Siena Root (“Flowers), added their own special touch to it and created something truly special.  The album closes out with “Beyond the Sun” which combines of this band’s influences into one signature sound that is all their own that shows that they are not just a lame copy band.  This band is pulling from classic influences and playing and writing with all the heart and soul that a band should write with.

Children of the Sun may look like a gimmick but hey, ever band has a gimmick but musically Children of the sun are the real fucking deal.  It’s so amazing to hear a much younger generation keep the music of our elders alive and well for whole new generation (and even older generation) to feel their ears upon.  Children of the Sun have presented the masses with Flowers and all we can do from here is plant them and hope that they grow bigger than anything imaginable.  Peace, love, and Flowers indeed.
