Concert Review: Lacuna Coil – May 05, 2012 – Atlanta, GA

Fifteen years is a long time to do anything constantly. It’s even more of a rare thing to see a band survive that long these days and with all their members intact. To celebrate their 15th Anniversary, Lacuna Coil chose to celebrate with the fans by bringing the Dark Legacy tour to the US which was a treat that we’ve all been waiting for. For this tour, Lacuna Coil dug deep into their catalog to dust off some old classics and breathe some new life into them. As I prepared myself for their performance here in Atlanta, I was ecstatic and I couldn’t wait to see just what they would pull off. Hell, I even managed to not cheat and look at the set list ahead of time in order to be surprised.

The band took the stage to a roar from their faithful fans and wasted no time slamming right into “I Don’t Believe In Tomorrow.” The reaction from the crowd was as intense and responsive as I’ve come to know of Lacuna Coil fans. This crowd was pumped up and I knew right away that this was going to be a magical night. Lead singer Cristina Scabbia addressed the crowd by telling us how grateful they were for all the love and support. As the band launched into “Senzafine” from their Unleashed Memories album, the crowd went absolutely nuts. From there the band dug even deeper going back to the band’s first album In a Reverie and pulling out “Circle” which seemed to be more obscure than the audience was prepared for. The song went over awesomely well but I was totally humored by the fact that a lot of the crowd didn’t know this song right away. As a huge fan of the band, I almost felt like, “Wow. This one is for ME!” You got to love when a band can make you feel as if they are playing just for you.

“Give Me Something More” and “Spellbound” were huge highlights of the first set and on those two songs Cristina and male vocalist Andi Ferro really locked it down together. The chemistry that those two have on stage is nothing short of electrifying and watching the two of them work off each other is mesmerizing. When one of them is singing, the other is working the stage and the crowd as if to make sure we are all still on the same level. The band took a short break and returned with a really fantastic acoustic set that managed to captivate and still command the attention and energy of the crowd. I really thought that this would bring things down but it was almost like a cool down and rest before another face melting electric set. “Falling Again” from In a Reverie gave me goose bumps and really showcased Cristina’s ability to take her voice to some unexplored places. “Shallow Life” was absolutely breathtaking and I loved that it showed a beautifully melancholy side of Lacuna Coil rarely seen and/or heard.

As the band took another short break, I was racking my brain trying to think of all the songs that they hadn’t played and was trying to think of what they would pull out. Lacuna Coil took the stage once again and slammed us all in the face with “Our Truth” from Karmacode which was mind blowing to say the least. They delivered it with so much energy you would have never known that they had already played for nearly and an hour and fifteen minutes. “Upsidedown” was a surprising highlight for me. I didn’t really dig this one on the new album Dark Adrenaline but I’ll be damned if Andi didn’t bring his A-Game on this one. For the rest of their 2 hour marathon performance, Lacuna Coil dug deep again to polish off such classic, unearth gems as “To Live is to Hide” and “1:19” but it was the one two punch of “Trip The Darkness” and “My Spirt” that closed the show to a massive roar from the crowd. As the band took their final bow to the crowd, you could just see it on the faces of the band and the crowd that this was a magical night. The connection was made and Lacuna Coil offered up the ultimate thank you to their fans for 15 years of love and support.

Lacuna Coil is a band that truly knows how to deliver a top notch performance. They are an electrifying and at times awe inspiring band. To see them connecting with each other and the crowd is something you just don’t see with every band. When watching a Lacuna Coil performance, you just can’t help but feel that they are playing to just you. They have a way of making you feel like you are part of the experience and that is what a truly great live show is supposed to do. It’s supposed to make you feel like you are a part of the show. Here’s to another 15 years Lacuna Coil. Thank you for the music and thank you for putting on one of the best performances I have ever seen.
